"On Valentine’s Day last year, I went to the Blind Cat in the Mission at the recommendation of an old friend and drank tequila with the regulars and lonely hearts who, like me, had nowhere else to be. This time, a few days before Christmas and in a Joni Mitchell mood, I wandered the Mission with the vague idea that I’d return to an old haunt for a second major holiday." I was so busy with the new city delirium I didn't notice that another one of my dive bar essays is up at @chowhound, this one about Christmas and Valentine's and a Judy Garland joint called the Phone Booth that redeemed the holidays for me this year.
"Penny for a thought" -writingsbycalypso
Spent all her pennies on his thoughts,
Trying to figure him inside out.
Who would have thought that she'd run out someday.
The pennies never seemed to matter, apparently.
Left her in vain, all to her dismay.
