I've always loved the concept of this film; some lunatic is killing people at random how they appear in an author's novel just as he's arrived in Rome. Like most early Argento films, there's a number of red herrings and the entertainment is in the mystery of who done it. It could be a number of people, every sure has enough motive, but once the killer is revealed, there's still more mystery. The giallos were good at that, totally throwing in another twist a little before the movie ends, just long enough for it to unfold and make sense to the story. The true reveal at the end is quite surprising and actually kind of upsetting seeing as you spent some invested time with this character. It's shown in flashback that he's been writing about his murders, because he was sexually humiliated by a young woman when he was young and he may or may not have killed her. Some things are intentionally left vague for you to figure out and that's what is great about this movie. There are little clues here and there to discover every time you watch it. Like most Argento movies, it's not exceptionally gory, but it does have some brutally violent scenes. Most killings are done with a razor, but one woman is choked to death when the killer stuffs pages of the book in her mouth. Can't say I've never seen anything like that. Of course, the cinematography and lighting are really great and I also enjoyed the soundtrack. It's your usual shots of leather gloved hands slashing women. It's an amazing and entertaining mystery that'll keep you guessing the whole time.
